LEV Examinations

(Dust extraction / fume extraction/ school fume cupboards)

LEV systems are designed to remove hazardous substances from the workplace environment.

There are three types of contaminant: gases, vapours and particulates:

GAS - a substance that does not exist as a solid or liquid at normal room temperature and pressure (e.g. sulphur dioxide)

VAPOUR - the gaseous phase of a substance that usually exists as a solid or liquid at normal room temperature and pressure (e.g. solvent vapour)

PARTICULATE - this can be subdivided into five types:
  • aerosols - dispersion of microscopic solid or liquid particles in air

  • dusts - solid particles capable of temporary suspension in air

  • fumes - solid particles produced by condensation from the gaseous phase.

  • smoke - particles resulting from incomplete combustion of organic matter.

  • mist - dispersion of liquid droplets in air but large enough to be seen by the naked eye.

Most LEV systems are (legally) required to be tested within a 14-month timeframe. Most businesses opt to test their LEV’s every 12 months.

There are a few exceptions that require systems to be tested more frequently (eg some grinding wheels)
