As a rough guide: at 80dB, the noise is intrusive but normal conversation is still possible; at 85dB you have to shout to talk to someone 2m away. Action levels are standardised on an 8-hour working day.
At levels above the upper action value of 85dB, hearing protection is mandatory.
It is advised to repeat assessments every two years, or sooner if any changes in the workplace have occurred.
